5 Ways to Demonstrate Integrity

As one of AIESEC core values, I’m sure most of us have heard the term before. But what is the meaning of integrity? Integrity is the practice of being honest and showing consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values. The word integrity evolved from the Latin adjective “integer” meaning whole or complete. In this context, integrity is the inner sense of “wholeness” derived from qualities such as honesty and character consistency.

Having a high degree of integrity means that:

  • You are trustworthy and reliable both as a team member and a team leader.
  • You practice and encourage open and honest communication in your team.
  • You are responsible for every action you take.

Electronic signals are said to have integrity when there is no disruption of information between one domain and another, such as from a flash drive to a computer system. Such integrity is a fundamental principle of information assurance. Corrupted information is untrustworthy, while uncorrupted information is of value.

Maintaining integrity at work is crucial for employees at every level, especially as you continue to move up the ladder. Having integrity helps foster an open and positive work environment and an ethical approach to decision making. You will gain respect and trust from your team members and leaders by showing that you’re an honest and dependable person.

How To Demonstrate Integrity

Respect and follow rules and guidelines placed in a team

Workplace policies are created to guide you on best practices for everything from conduct to dress code. Following the rules and instructions enables you to make informed decisions based on the company values and objectives.

Be ready to work

Many of us know people who are willing to delegate but hesitant to get their hands dirty. On the other hand, people with integrity are eager to go above and beyond with their work and help others.

Lead by example

Your working style and attitude towards others will help set a solid foundation for what you value most in others, especially people who report to you. Working to a high standard and maintaining professional conduct encourages others to follow suit.

Respect people's opinions even when you don't agree with them is important in every work environment.

Respect people’s opinions even when you don’t agree with them

No matter how great your working environment may be, there will be times when you don’t agree with someone else’s opinion. In other cases, it is still important to be respectful, listen, and take on what the other person is saying.

Be accountable for your mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes, from time to time, owning up or being responsible for errors demonstrates that you are honest and open to constructive feedback from your team.
